THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Summerville Light is one of South Carolina's best-known ghost light legends. Witnesses have reported a mysterious glowing light appearing along the old railroad bed where local folklore says a tragic accident once occurred. The unexplained phenomenon continues to attract curious visitors after dark.

The Summerville Light is one of South Carolina's best-known ghost-light legends. The story is usually tied to old Sheep Island Road, also known locally as Light Road, near the railroad corridor outside Summerville. According to the most common version of the tale, a woman once waited near the tracks each night with a lantern for her husband, who worked on or traveled by train. After he was killed and reportedly decapitated in a railroad accident, she continued returning to the tracks, searching for him with her lantern. Witnesses have described a strange floating light, sometimes green, blue, white, or orange, hovering in the darkness, growing brighter, moving toward visitors, or even chasing them from the area. The original active stretch of Sheep Island Road has since been heavily altered or bulldozed for development, but the legend remains one of the classic haunted stories of the Summerville area.
