THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The ruins of an old Hilton Head plantation are said to be haunted by William Eddings Baynard and, according to some stories, a ghostly funeral procession.

The Stoney-Baynard Plantation Ruins stand near Braddock’s Point on Hilton Head Island. The tabby mansion was completed in 1805 and later acquired by the Baynard family. Charleston Terrors describes legends of William Eddings Baynard’s restless spirit wandering the ruins and the nearby Baynard Mausoleum after Civil War-era raids, disturbed graves, and the eventual destruction of the mansion. Visitors have reported seeing Baynard and even a spectral funeral procession near the site.
