THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Local folklore says the spirit of Dixie Boykin remains at Cool Springs, where witnesses have reported a period-dressed apparition, unexplained music, and other unusual activity.
Cool Springs was constructed around 1832 as a summer residence for John Boykin and later became one of Camden's notable antebellum homes. Local ghost tradition associates the plantation with Dixie Boykin. According to Camden-area folklore, Boykin's spirit remained attached to Cool Springs after his death. Stories include the apparition of a man dressed in early twentieth-century clothing, unexplained period music, and a tradition of leaving a glass of wine for Dixie. The Ghost of Dixie Boykin is also among the local stories presented during Historic Camden folklore tours. Cool Springs is private property and should be viewed only from an appropriate public location.
