THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Strawberry Chapel is a small eighteenth-century chapel surrounded by ancient graves and towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss. Visitors have reported ghostly figures, mysterious lights, unexplained voices, and unusual activity throughout the cemetery. Its quiet setting has made it one of South Carolina's most atmospheric haunted sites.
Built in 1725 in the former town of Childsbury, Strawberry Chapel sits among old oaks, magnolias, Spanish moss, graves, and historic tombs outside Moncks Corner near Mepkin Abbey. Local legends have long surrounded the chapel and cemetery, including the story of Catherine Chicken, who at age seven was reportedly tied to a tombstone by her schoolmaster in 1748. Paranormal investigators and visitors have reported cold spots, EVP activity, unexplained mists, eerie feelings, and physical contact such as hair being pulled. Due to vandalism and trespassing concerns, the grounds have reportedly been posted with trespass signs, motion-activated cameras, and nighttime police surveillance.
