THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Bingham's Light is one of South Carolina's classic ghost-light legends, associated with mysterious lights seen near the old railroad area in Dillon County. Local stories often connect the phenomenon to a tragic death and a lantern-bearing spirit still searching the tracks. Witnesses have described glowing lights, beng chased by the light, eerie sounds, and an unsettling atmosphere along the dark rural route.

Bingham's Light is one of South Carolina's classic ghost-light legends. Local folklore describes a mysterious, flickering light seen swaying in the darkness near the railroad tracks. At times, witnesses claim it appears as an intensely bright light roughly the height of a locomotive headlamp, and some stories say the light will move toward people or chase them from the area. One common version of the legend tells of a man named John Bingham, sometimes described as a farmer, local resident, or railroad worker, who was walking along the tracks with a lantern when he became trapped. As an oncoming train approached, he desperately flashed his light to warn the conductor, but the train could not stop in time. According to the tale, his spirit still haunts the railroad with the lantern he carried that night.
