THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The Death Waltz is a frontier ghost legend associated with Fort Union in which a dead soldier supposedly returned during his former sweetheart's wedding.

A nineteenth-century frontier legend tells of a soldier who returned from a dangerous patrol to discover the woman he loved marrying another man. According to the tale, his mutilated ghost appeared during the wedding and dragged the bride into a frenzied waltz until she collapsed and died. Later visitors have also reported unexplained voices, cries, and other sounds on the windswept grounds.
