THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The Abbeville County Museum occupies a historic building that once served as the county jail and dates to the Civil War era. Its long and sometimes somber history has inspired reports of unexplained activity and stories suggesting that former occupants may still linger within.

The historic jail building now serves as the county museum, and dates back to the civil war era. The third floor of the jailhouse is believed to be the most haunted, as the worst prisoners were housed here. Staff claim to have run into a friendly African American prisoner named Earl on the upper floor, while others have heard ghostly footsteps.
