THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The tomb of Julia Legare is tied to one of Edisto Island’s best-known legends: a young woman said to have been mistakenly buried alive whose mausoleum door would not stay shut.

At the graveyard of the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island, legend says Julia Legare fell into a coma in the mid-1800s, was declared dead, and was sealed inside the family mausoleum. Years later, the story claims her remains were found near the door, suggesting she had awakened after burial. Afterward, the mausoleum door was said to repeatedly open by itself, even after chains, locks, and heavy replacement doors were used. Today, the broken marble door remains at the entrance, and visitors still report strange feelings and unexplained images near the tomb.
