THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The historic Admiral's House at the former Charleston Naval Base is associated with a local legend of a young girl's apparition appearing among the trees on the property after dark. Often described in retellings as the ghost of an enslaved child, the figure is said to wander outside the 1905 commandant's residence.
Officially known as Quarters A, the Admiral's House was constructed in 1905 as the residence of the commandant of the Charleston Navy Yard. The imposing Neo-Classical house later became known locally as the Admiral's House and housed generations of senior naval officers before the Charleston Naval Base closed. Local paranormal lore claims that a young girl can sometimes be seen wandering through a cluster of trees on the grounds after nightfall. Some versions identify the apparition as an enslaved child, although that identification should be treated as folklore rather than established history; the house itself was constructed decades after slavery ended in the United States. The reported apparition nevertheless became part of the supernatural tradition surrounding the former naval base. The restored house is now used as an event venue at North Charleston Riverfront Park, and access to the house itself depends upon events, reservations, and venue rules.
