THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Local legend says the spirit of Agnes of Glasgow wanders near her grave in Camden, still searching for the British officer she followed to America during the Revolutionary War. Visitors have reported seeing a young woman in period clothing, hearing faint weeping, and sensing a mysterious presence around the grave.

Agnes of Glasgow is said to have traveled from Scotland to South Carolina while searching for her lover, a British officer named Lieutenant Angus McPherson. According to the traditional story, she became ill and died in Camden before finding him and was buried at night near an early Presbyterian meetinghouse. Her grave is located in the Old Presbyterian Burying Ground section near the entrance of Quaker Cemetery. The legend claims that her ghost continues searching for McPherson and has been seen wandering around the graveyard and nearby wooded areas. Some accounts incorrectly associate her burial with the present Bethesda Presbyterian Church on DeKalb Street because the Bethesda congregation previously worshiped beside the old burial ground. Parts of the legend are historically disputed, particularly the claim that King Haigler buried Agnes, since he died years before her reported death.
