THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Visitors to the historic Alleghany County Courthouse have reported hearing footsteps ascending or descending the staircase when no one is present. Unexplained whistling has also been heard near the building's former jail cells. The recurring sounds have led some to believe that a former prisoner or courthouse occupant remains within the building.
Built in 1933, the historic courthouse was constructed to replace the original edifice which was destroyed by the ‘Big Fire of 1932’. Visitors to the building nowadays have reported hearing disembodied footsteps on the staircase and the unexplained sound of whistling near the decommissioned prison cells.
