THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The Alta Club is said to be haunted by a man who died after falling asleep with a lit cigar and starting a fire on an upper floor. His apparition has reportedly been encountered inside the historic club, particularly around the area connected to the blaze. Witnesses also describe unexplained noises and the lingering smell of cigar smoke when no one nearby is smoking.

This is a private upscale gentleman’s club, used for business and social interaction among the city’s elite, that was established in 1883. According to reports, long ago a man fell asleep with a lit cigar and set the upper floor on fire, perishing in the process. His ghost is said to wander the halls of the upper floors. There is also said to be a ghost in the basement that smells of lilac perfume, and this spirit is known to touch visitors lightly on the shoulder.
