THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The historic Amherst Inn is associated with reports of unexplained activity dating from its years as a hotel and boarding establishment. Visitors have described strange noises, unusual sensations, and possible movement caused by an unseen presence. Its long history and stories involving former guests have contributed to its reputation as a haunted inn.

This 1877 bed and breakfast inn’s claim to fame is that while it operated as a hotel, John Dillinger visited and had lunch there. He left the waitress a five dollar tip (a lot of money in that day) and has since been immortalized in the establishment’s colourful history. The inn also served as a boarding house, a nursing home and possible even a bordello throughout its chequered past. The building is supposedly haunted by Philomae ‘Mae’ Kedrowski, a foul tempered woman and former owner who cursed like a sailor. The current owners have reported seeing a diminutive woman standing at the top of the main staircase, and have smelt cigar smoke and heard a scolding woman’s voice swearing at them. However, the spirit has reportedly quietened down in recent years. Other activity reported at this location includes doors opening and closing of their own accord, objects moving around, strange scents and a shadowy figure who has been seen rushing through an upstairs hallway.
