THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The centerpiece of the mansion's nearly 100-year-old paranormal legacy is the "Lady in Blue" (or Woman in Blue), an elegant apparition frequently spotted by passersby gazing out of the upper bedroom windows. Museum staff and caretakers routinely document sudden, heavy shadow figures moving through the rooms and feeling an intense, unseen presence. Local folklore also states that her spirit travels to the nearby David Finney Inn via a historic underground tunnel that once connected the two properties.

The 17th-century house was originally built by Dr. John Finney; his son David Finney built a home across the street. An underground tunnel connected the two. A ghost who is thought to be one of the family members haunts both residences. At the Amstel House Museum, the presence seems to like the third floor, where it opens and closes windows and doors and moves objects.
