THE STORY
Reported Haunting
This home was built by a man of Minorcan descent, Charles Segui, in 1910. The primary hauntings reported at the historic 1904 property include:Charles and Maude Sequi: The original owners of the home—descendants of a Minorcan family that arrived in St. Augustine in the 1700s—are frequently seen manifesting as full-bodied apparitions roaming the main hallways.Martha Lee and Toby: The Sequi's daughter, Martha Lee, lived out her life as a lonely recluse in the house alongside her beloved cat, Toby. In the guest room named after her, visitors routinely report the distinct sensation of an invisible cat jumping onto the bed, kneading the blankets with its claws, and purring loudly near their feet. The Heartbroken Lover: Local legend says Martha Lee once fell in love with a man when the home operated as a boarding house, but her mother abruptly threw him out. Guests have reported experiencing overwhelming feelings of intense sorrow and sudden, unexplainable cold spots in the room where the lovers were separated.
This home was built by a man of Minorcan descent, Charles Segui, in 1910. Previous owners have said that a “playful” ghost inhabits the home – apparently he likes to shuffle jewelry around. If you want the most haunted room, ask for the “Martha Lee” room. (Martha Lee was the daughter of the home’s original owner.) The bed squeaks when no one is in it, and many people report feeling as though unseen hands tuck them into bed at night.
