THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Appomattox Manor is a historic Virginia plantation house with centuries of history connected to the surrounding property. Stories of apparitions and unexplained activity have become associated with the estate, with some accounts suggesting that former residents still linger on the grounds.

Appomattox Manor was the former plantation owned by Dr. Richard Eppes, which became Union headquarters during the Civil War. Now a restored museum, the manor is said to be haunted by the ghost of a Union soldier. So the story goes, a nurse had been hiding him in the basement wall when the Confederates took over and inspected the home. When they found some of his gear in a storage room, they arrested her. The soldier couldn’t get out of the hiding place on his own, and eventually died there. His body was found during 1953 basement work, and his ghost has been heard scratching at the walls trying to get out.
