THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Local legend says a troll-like figure patrols the old stone walls of Badwell Cemetery, a historic burial ground connected to South Carolina's French Huguenot settlement.

Badwell Cemetery is a historic McCormick County burial ground associated with the French Huguenot settlement and the Gibert and Petigru families. The cemetery is enclosed in part by old stonework and was once entered through an iron gate bearing a Grim Reaper-like figure. Regional haunted-location sources consistently describe a legend of a troll or troll-like guardian seen walking the cemetery perimeter. The submitted reference to a spirit named Alice appears to conflate Badwell with a different South Carolina legend and is not retained here. Visitors should treat the remote historic cemetery respectfully and avoid entering outside lawful access conditions.
