THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The Ghost of "Bloody Mary": The building’s most famous entity is believed to be an inmate named Mary who tragically hanged herself in an upstairs cell. For over four decades, employees and visitors have reported seeing a haggard woman in a jail smock sitting near the windows or pacing the upper floors. The Silhouette Man: A prominent dark, male shadow figure is frequently spotted standing next to the railing of the top-floor balcony, near the area where another historic prisoner took his own life.Dungeon Poltergeist Activity: When the structure operated as a nightlife venue, cocktail waitresses and kitchen staff routinely documented heavy pots and pans moving on their own, sudden freezing temperature drops, and an intense, oppressive presence inside the building's four concrete solitary confinement cells.Courthouse Square Apparitions: The supernatural energy overflows onto the surrounding grounds, where tourists and locals report seeing spectral figures dressed in 19th-century "Wild West" attire walk across the lawn and vanish behind trees.

The Bastille, circa 1897, was a prison until 1964 when the old ceiling caved in. More recently it contained restaurants and night clubs, and, according to rumor, a few haunts. At restaurant kitchens, pots and pans would move on their own, and employees often described a heavy presence or a feeling that they were being watched. The building is now just rented out as office space.
