THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Former prisoners are said to haunt this brutal Victorian-era gaol, including the last man executed here, whose dying omen became part of local legend.

Beaumaris Gaol served as a prison and execution site until its closure in 1878. One of its best-known ghost stories concerns the last man hanged there, who reportedly proclaimed his innocence and predicted that the nearby clock faces would never again show the same time. Other deceased prisoners are also said to make their presence known, and visitors have reported unexplained phenomena within the former prison.
