THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The historic Belvidere Mansion in Claremore has accumulated ghost stories during its long history. Visitors and staff have reported apparitions, unexplained footsteps, and other unusual activity within the stately residence, contributing to its reputation as a haunted Oklahoma landmark.
Belvidere Mansion, built by John M. Bayless around in 1902, is a gothic-style brick home. Its third floor is a ballroom. In 1907, six months before it was completed, Mr. Bayless died of complications from appendicitis surgery. Mary Bayless and their six surviving children finished the mansion and lived there until 1919. Rogers County Historical Society restored it in 1991, but the John Bayless family is said to still call the place home. Witnesses have heard unexplained noises, seen hazy figures, heard toilets flush by themselves, and felt hot and cold spots and touches.
