THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Berkeley Castle is one of England's oldest continuously inhabited castles and is associated with centuries of ghost stories. Apparitions, mysterious footsteps, and unexplained voices have been reported throughout the castle, particularly in areas connected with the murder of King Edward II. Visitors also describe an eerie atmosphere and shadow figures moving through the historic halls.

The castle used to have a foul pit where animal carcasses, and occasionally that of a human, were dumped. Some prisoners were locked in a nearby cell where the stench itself was enough to make them ill and soon die. One prisoner was King Edward II who managed to survive his stay, but is thought to have been executed when a red hot poker was jammed up his rectum. King Edward’s screams are still heard to this day. A hooded figure has been reported in the Morning Room and the ghost of a jester who fell to his death is thought to be the shadow seen in the Great Hall.
