THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Big Bull Tunnel has more than a century of ghost lore centered on groans, screams and articulate voices reportedly heard coming from inside the rock during railroad operations.
Big Bull Tunnel is a historic railroad tunnel in Wise County between the St. Paul and Coeburn areas. Newspaper reports from the early twentieth century describe railroad workers hearing disturbing sounds inside the tunnel, including groans, cries and apparently articulate voices coming from behind the tunnel walls. One frequently repeated account describes a voice begging that a crushing weight be removed, followed by another disturbing declaration. The tunnel also has a documented history of serious railroad accidents and worker deaths. The location remains part of an active railroad corridor and is not a public ghost-hunting destination. Visitors should not enter, walk on or approach active railroad tracks or trespass on railroad property.
