THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Charlotte's historic Bootlegger House is an 1890s Eastlake cottage known for a hidden compartment once used to conceal illegal liquor during Prohibition. Residents have reported phantom footsteps, unexplained wet footprints, faucets turning on by themselves, doors opening or locking without explanation, furniture moving and the fleeting apparition of a man wearing a raincoat and hat.
Located in Charlotte's historic Fourth Ward, the Bootlegger House was moved from its original location on Caldwell Street during redevelopment in the 1970s. The home retains many original architectural features as well as a secret compartment associated with its Prohibition-era history. Former residents have described footsteps on empty stairs, faucets activating by themselves, strange footprints, doors behaving inexplicably, objects moving and an apparition of a mysterious man. The property is a private residence and should be viewed only from public areas.
