THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The Yankee Fork riverbanks in Idaho are allegedly haunted by the ghost of a popular 19th-century Bulgarian monk who reportedly drowned in the area. On the exact day of his disappearance, a stranger claimed to see him playing with children miles away, sparking rumors that he could bilocate. Ever since, backcountry travelers and riders have reported seeing his black-robed phantom pacing the water's edge at night, vanished the moment anyone approaches.

The Bulgarian Monk lived in the area from about the 1870s to 1890s, when reports say he drowned. Some say he was quite a well-known and beloved character, giving lectures and traveling. Tales say that on the day he drowned, he was seen 25 miles away playing with some children. Since then, folks have seen the monk’s black-robed form walking along the riverbanks carrying a lantern.
