THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Bury Bolton Street Station is associated with Billy the Guard, a railway ghost reportedly encountered by passengers and employees for decades at the East Lancashire Railway.

Rather than mapping the entire East Lancashire Railway, the strongest and most precisely located ghost tradition centers on Bury Bolton Street Station. The heritage railway has itself publicized stories of Billy the Guard, a spectral railwayman said to haunt the station and particularly its waiting-room areas. Staff and passengers have described encounters with a railway worker who appears unexpectedly and then cannot be found, along with other unexplained experiences around the historic station. Because the railway organization itself preserves the tradition, this is one of the strongest entries from the Manchester list.
