Reported Haunting
The historic Salvador Armijo House, later known as Casa Esencia, has been associated with reports of paranormal activity. Visitors have described unexplained footsteps, apparitions, and other unusual occurrences believed to be connected to former occupants of the residence.
This building is almost two centuries old, and is haunted by many ghosts from the past. A ghost in the Armijo Room is that of a woman in a white dress, who often orders meals for patrons before vanishing. She has also appeared to diners in the old Wine Press room. Silverware is also moved around this room, and appears in a different order the following morning then in standard tableware formation. A spirit also likes to play the piano in the Armijo Room, and does so frequently in the early hours of morning. The ghost of a woman crying for help has been seen in the Sarachino Room of the restaurant, usually accompanied by a whiff of perfume. In the adjacent Chacon Room, the figure of a man in a suit has been seen standing or sitting behind them when they look in the mirror. However, when they turn around, he has gone. In the Zamora Room, a pleasant spirit of a woman often sits with patrons, before fading away at the end of a meal. In the Bar of the Maria Teresa Restaurant, the ghost of a cowboy has been standing in the doorway, but his presence is seen only rarely. In the Baca Room, disembodied voices are heard and furniture moves itself around during the night. The Board Room’s are also haunted, with staff frequently coming across figures in ancient garb who disappear when approached.
