THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Catwoman's Bridge on Harrisburg Road near the North Carolina-South Carolina state line is tied to a gruesome local legend involving a woman killed in a crash near the bridge. Visitors have reported phantom crash sounds, unexplained fog and lights, vehicle malfunctions, and mysterious cat paw prints and handprints appearing on cars.

Catwoman's Bridge is the local name associated with the Harrisburg Road crossing of McAlpine Creek in Indian Land, South Carolina, just south of the North Carolina state line. According to local legend, a woman driving home at night swerved to avoid a cat near the bridge, crashed into the woods, and was later found dead beneath the bridge, where cats were supposedly feeding on her body. No confirmed historical record of this alleged crash has been located, so that portion of the story remains folklore. A detailed firsthand encounter submitted to GhostVillage in January 2006 describes three friends visiting the bridge after hearing the legend. The witness reported that a thick fog suddenly obscured the road, the car's engine died as it entered the bridge, and the brakes appeared ineffective until the vehicle rolled to the opposite side. After restarting the car, the group reported seeing bright lights angled upward from beside the roadway as though another vehicle had left the road. Upon returning home, they claimed to find numerous cat paw prints across the hood, roof, and trunk, along with streaks and human handprints on the rear window, despite the car reportedly having been washed shortly before the trip. Local residents later identified Catwoman's Bridge as the Harrisburg Road bridge near Barberville Road. The older bridge associated with the 2006 account was subsequently replaced, so the present structure occupies the same historic crossing but is not the exact bridge described in the original encounter.
