Chestnut Grove Cemetery was once an Erie burial ground and, since its establishment in 1819, has seen the burial of over 18,000 folks. Twenty-five of them were victims of a local train disaster in 1876. The Pacific Express fell into the river when the bridge collapsed, killing between 80 and 92 and injuring 64. The engineer of the bridge, Charles Collins, is believed to have committed suicide in January 1877. The cemetery has both Collins’ grave and a 70-foot obelisk memorial to the accident victims. Visitors here have reported seeing men and women in late 19th century dress near the monument and a man, presumed to be Collins, kneeling and saying “I’m sorry.”
