THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Chetham's Library openly acknowledges rumours of a mysterious Grey Lady reported in passages connecting the reading room with the secret stairway and Minstrels' Gallery.
Chetham's Library occupies medieval buildings dating to 1421 and has operated as a public library since the seventeenth century. Its own historical material discusses rumours of a mysterious Grey Lady said to hover in passages between the Library reading room and the secret staircase leading toward the Minstrels' Gallery. A purported early twentieth-century ghost photograph also became part of the tradition. Although the apparition remains folklore, the story is significant because it is preserved by the Library itself rather than existing only on commercial ghost-list websites. Public access is generally through pre-booked guided tours and events.
