THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Chicken Alley is associated with a persistent Asheville ghost story about a black-clad doctor carrying a medicine bag and cane. The traditional story identifies him as Dr. Jamie Smith, but local historical research has challenged both the alleged murder and the doctor's existence, making this a documented urban legend rather than a verified historical haunting.
Downtown Asheville's Chicken Alley is the setting of a long-circulated ghost tale involving a physician called Dr. Jamie Smith, usually described wearing a black fedora and long coat and carrying a medicine bag and silver-tipped cane. Traditional versions claim he was stabbed while attempting to stop a tavern fight in 1902. However, local historical research has challenged the story and found no reliable evidence supporting either the alleged doctor or murder. The location remains notable as part of Asheville's paranormal folklore, but the Jamie Smith story should not be presented as established history.
