THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Chickies Rock is associated with generations of strange folklore, including reports of a tall shadowy "Hat Man" standing near the cliffs and unexplained drumming heard by hikers despite repeated attempts to locate its source.

Chickies Rock rises above the Susquehanna River between Columbia and Marietta and has accumulated an unusually large collection of ghost stories, strange encounters, and local legends. One of the more recent accounts dates to 2004, when witnesses reportedly encountered a tall, dark humanoid silhouette wearing what appeared to be a fedora-style hat and flowing cape. The figure has become known locally as the "Hat Man." Various stories attempt to identify the apparition, but no historical identity has been established. Hikers have also reported hearing rhythmic, distant drumming in the area with no visible source, even after attempting to follow the sound. Older legends surrounding the rock include tragic deaths, curses, hidden treasure, and other supernatural figures. The exact origins of many stories are difficult to establish, but the persistence and variety of the reports have made Chickies Rock one of Lancaster County's best-known locations for supernatural folklore.
