THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The trail to Chilnualna Falls is said to echo with the cries of a young boy who drowned nearby. According to legend, anyone who follows the voice and attempts a rescue may be lured into the water and suffer the same fate.

Chilnualna Falls is a series of cascades in the southern portion of Yosemite National Park near Wawona. Local supernatural folklore tells of a young boy who drowned in the area and whose cries can still be heard along the trail. The voice reportedly sounds as though a child is calling for help, but the legend warns visitors not to follow it toward the water. Another tradition associates the falls with Pohono, a dangerous spirit said to lure travelers toward the edge before pushing them into the current.
