Stories dating to 1806 and 1811 describe glowing figures and entire spectral armies appearing above Chimney Rock and Hickory Nut Gorge.
Chimney Rock is associated with extraordinary apparition accounts dating to the early nineteenth century. In 1806, Elizabeth Reaves and other witnesses reportedly saw luminous human-like figures dressed in white near the mountain. In 1811, witnesses described spectral armies and mounted figures appearing to battle in the sky above Hickory Nut Gorge.
