THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The Clark Street Bridge overlooks the site of the 1915 Eastland disaster, in which 844 people died when the overloaded passenger ship rolled onto its side in the Chicago River. Witnesses have reportedly seen victims floating in the water, while paranormal investigators claim to have recorded unexplained voices beneath the surface.
On July 24, 1915, the passenger steamer Eastland capsized beside the Clark Street Bridge before leaving its dock for a company excursion. Hundreds of passengers became trapped inside the vessel or drowned in the river, making it one of the deadliest maritime disasters in United States history. Modern visitors have reported apparitions in the river, and investigators using underwater microphones claim to have captured voices, including speech resembling Czech, the native language of many victims.
