THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Athens' preserved 1912 Fire Hall No. 1 is associated with mysteriously swinging and rattling basement chains, phantom footsteps and sightings of an old-fashioned firefighter traditionally identified as Captain Hiram Peeler.
The Classic Center incorporates Athens' historic Fire Hall No. 1, constructed in 1912 and preserved when the modern convention and performing arts complex was developed. Stories of unexplained activity reportedly began while the building was still an operating fire station. Firefighters described chains in the basement rattling without an obvious cause, and similar reports continued when the building later served the Chamber of Commerce. One employee reportedly investigated the noise and found a hanging chain visibly swinging back and forth. Other accounts include footsteps on otherwise empty stairs and an apparition resembling an elderly firefighter in an old-fashioned dark uniform. Athens ghost tradition commonly identifies this figure as longtime firefighter Captain Hiram H. Peeler. Peeler died in 1928 from injuries sustained after falling down an open elevator shaft while responding to a fire at McDorman-Bridges Mortuary; he did not die inside Fire Hall No. 1, and historical records identify him with Station Two at the time of the fatal accident. His identification as the Classic Center spirit should therefore be regarded as local folklore.
