THE STORY
Reported Haunting
This ancient Norman fortress in Essex, UK, is famously haunted by James Parnell, a 17th-century Quaker who tragically died in the dungeon after being forced to climb a rope for his food. Visitors frequently report hearing his disembodied moans near the eastern wall, alongside sightings of a headless nun and a phantom cat.
A man named James Parnell was imprisoned here until his death. Part of his punishment involved having to climb a rope in order to obtain his food, but never recovered after a fall. James is reported throughout the building since his unfortunate passing.
