THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The Gray Lady is a campus legend about a ghost of a young Southern Belle who committed suicide after her lover was killed for trying to sneak into her dorm during the Civil War.

The Gray Lady is a campus legend about a ghost of a young Southern Belle who committed suicide after her lover was killed for trying to sneak into her dorm during the Civil War. Her apparition has been seen, and she has been known to close windows and iron clothes. However, years later, a student admitted to staging the haunting, posing as the ghost. The campus is believed to have some real haunts, though, including a haunted phone that calls the Campus Safety office at 2:10 a.m. from the elevator of the Robnett-Spence Building. The ghost is thought to be a science student in who failed and then committed suicide in the 1970s. Another legend is about a wicker casket in the St. Clair Hall attic. It is said to be a viewing casket for president Luella St. Clair-Moss’s daughter Annilee, who died of rheumatism in 1900 at age 11.
