THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Former owners of the Craven House reported numerous unexplained occurrences, resulting in a 1961 Fate Magazine story about the supposedly haunted Camden home. The Craven House ghost remains part of Historic Camden's local folklore tours.
The circa-1789 Craven House belonged to John Craven, accountant to Camden founder Joseph Kershaw. The house was originally located on Mill Street and was moved to Historic Camden in 1970. Much of its interior woodwork survives from the original structure. The house has a documented paranormal reputation dating back decades. According to a Historic Camden tour publication, the home's last private owners reported numerous strange happenings, leading to a 1961 Fate Magazine article titled "A Haunted House in South Carolina." Historic Camden continues to include the Craven House ghost among the stories featured during its folklore and lantern tours.
