THE STORY
Reported Haunting
This historic chateauesque mansion in Denver is haunted by its original builder, Thomas Croke, who was so terrified by the home's eerie vibe that he moved out after just six months. Guests at the current inn report hearing a phantom baby crying in the cellar and witnessing typewriter keys striking on their own.
The 1890 Croke-Patterson Mansion, now bed-and-breakfast, has had an interesting history. So the stories go, original owner Thomas B. Croke entered the mansion just once, and whatever he saw or felt there was enough to convince him never to come back. He sold it to Thomas M. Patterson, who owned it for several generations. The place has been a dance studio, a radio station, a boardinghouse, and offices in its past, and some strange things started to happen during its renovation into an office building. Two guard dogs were found dead on the sidewalk outside after apparently leaping from a third-story window, and typewriters, copy machines and phones started to work on their own. Witnesses have reported apparitions (including that of Thomas Patterson), voices, knocks, baby cries, and footsteps.
