THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Local legend tells of a tragic accident at a bridge near Quitman in which a mother and her infant plunged into the waters below. Versions of the story differ on when the tragedy supposedly occurred and whether the mother was traveling by horse-drawn carriage or automobile, but the infant is said to have drowned. According to the legend, visitors who stop on the bridge late at night, turn off their vehicle, and listen carefully may hear the faint sound of a baby crying from the creek below. The story is part of the widespread "Crybaby Bridge" tradition found throughout the United States, and the historical details of the alleged tragedy remain unverified. (Submission by Jeremy Cawthon)
