THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The spirit of former First Lady Dolley Madison is said to reside at her home, built in 1822 by Richard Cutts, Dolley’s brother-in-law.

The spirit of former First Lady Dolley Madison is said to reside at her home, built in 1822 by Richard Cutts, Dolley’s brother-in-law. After her husband James Madison died in 1836, Dolley lived here until her death in 1849. Although the house’s next owner Rear Admiral Charles Wilkes changed things around a bit, turning what used to be the front porch into a window, the ghost of Dolley Madison has been seen in her rocking chair in the spot where the porch used to be.
