THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Visitors to the blackwater swamp at Cypress Gardens have reported strange sounds, sensations, and an uneasy presence around the artificial ruins left from the filming of The Patriot. Although the ruins are movie scenery rather than genuinely ancient structures, they have developed a supernatural reputation of their own.
Cypress Gardens is a 170-acre preserve built on land once belonging to Dean Hall Plantation and centered around an extensive blackwater cypress and tupelo swamp. The gardens opened to the public in 1932 and have since served as a filming location for numerous movies and television productions, including The Notebook and The Patriot. Among the unusual sights within the swamp are ruins created as scenery for the 2000 film The Patriot. Despite their relatively modern origin, the isolated structures have acquired a paranormal reputation. Visitors have reported hearing unexplained noises, sensing unseen presences, or experiencing an uncomfortable feeling while passing the ruins in the swamp. No specific spirit or historical death has been reliably linked to the reported activity, making the haunting a modern piece of local folklore associated with the eerie setting rather than the ruins' fictional appearance. Cypress Gardens is a public attraction operated by Berkeley County and should only be visited during authorized operating hours and in accordance with park rules.
