THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Dade Battlefield Historic State Park preserves the site of Dade's Battle, where on December 28, 1835, Seminole warriors ambushed Major Francis L. Dade and more than 100 U.S. soldiers marching from Fort Brooke toward Fort King. Nearly the entire command was killed in the fighting, an event that helped ignite the Second Seminole War. Visitors and paranormal investigators have reported unexplained footsteps, the sounds of horses and musket fire, shadowy figures, and disembodied voices across the historic battlefield. These experiences are often interpreted as echoes of the violent events that occurred on the grounds in 1835. (Submission by David Shutter)
