THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The Deep River Public Library is said to be haunted by former caretakers and patrons who remain attached to the historic building. Staff have reported footsteps, books moving without explanation, and unexplained voices after closing. Visitors have also described shadow figures seen among the library stacks.

The library is housed in an 1881 building, originally built as a home to banker Richard Pratt Spencer and his family. It became a library in 1933. Although additions were made over the years, folks say the building’s haunts stay in the original part. Witnesses describe disembodied voices, strange sounds, and the feeling that invisible entities are present.
