THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Situated in Newark, Delaware, this historic tavern—where Edgar Allan Poe famously stayed and allegedly cursed the town—is a hotbed for phantom activity. Patrons and staff frequently report seeing the spirits of Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers roaming the basement and structure.

The Deer Park Tavern is located on the former site of the St. Patrick’s Inn, which burned down. George Washington and Edgar Allan Poe both are said to have stayed at St. Patrick’s Inn. According to legend, Poe cursed the inn after slipping in the mud on the grounds. Ghostly occurrences reported here include unexplained noises and doors that open and close by themselves.
