THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Detroit Public Library’s Main Library has accumulated reports of phantom footsteps, knocking, books or objects moving, shadowy figures and the feeling of being watched in quiet parts of the building.
The Main Library on Woodward Avenue is one of Detroit’s landmark public buildings. Detroit Metro Times reported stories of books being moved or rearranged in basement archive areas, while later local reporting has collected staff accounts of footsteps, knocking, shadow figures and the feeling of being watched. Some stories also include a little-girl figure or a ghostly cat. These remain personal accounts and library folklore, but they are tied to a well-defined public location.
