THE STORY

Reported Haunting

One of Texas's best-known urban legends, Donkey Lady Bridge is associated with the ghost of a horribly burned woman said to wander the area after dark. Visitors frequently report strange screams, shadowy figures, and unexplained encounters near the bridge.

The Donkey Lady is an urban legend that is known throughout San Antonio. Allegedly a woman who was hideously burned and disfigured in a fire haunted the woods. Apparently driven insane by her disfigurement and the loss of two of her children in the same fire she was prone to attacking people who got too close to her. The most oft-repeated version of the story is that of a father and his two boys who went to set up camp in the woods near where the Donkey Lady lived. They were made uneasy by terrible noises and rustling in the woods, so the father, concerned there was a predator on the loose, told the boys to get back in their car and made to drive away. As they were driving off, they saw a hideously deformed creature launch itself at the hood of their car, landing on it and shattering their windshield. The father gunned it and drove to the nearest police station where he described his attacker as looking like a cross between a human … and a donkey.
