THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The former Traverse City State Hospital is associated with reports of voices, unexplained lights, apparitions, slamming doors and unusual activity in and around the historic hospital buildings.
The former Traverse City State Hospital opened in 1885 as the Northern Michigan Asylum and eventually grew into a large psychiatric hospital campus. Much of the property has since been restored and incorporated into the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Paranormal traditions include unexplained voices, lights, figures seen in former hospital areas, doors slamming and sensations of being watched. Local folklore also surrounds the wooded grounds and former hospital tunnels.
