THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The surviving Eloise complex in Westland is one of Michigan’s best-known paranormal locations, with reports of apparitions, voices, footsteps, shadow figures and other unexplained activity tied to the enormous former hospital and poorhouse system.
Eloise grew from a nineteenth-century poorhouse into a vast county medical and psychiatric complex that treated and housed thousands of people. Most of the historic campus is gone, but surviving buildings have become strongly associated with paranormal investigations and haunted-attraction programming. Reported phenomena include apparitions, disembodied voices, footsteps, shadow figures and intense feelings of an unseen presence. The site should only be entered through authorized tours or events.
