Acoma tradition associates Katzimo with an ancestral settlement whose route to the summit was lost after a destructive storm. Older accounts also describe the mesa as a place associated with ancestral spirits.
Enchanted Mesa, also called Katzimo or Mesa Encantada, rises northeast of Acoma Pueblo. Acoma tradition holds that ancestors once lived atop the mesa until a violent storm or landslide destroyed the access route. Historical accounts also record traditions associating ancestral spirits with the summit.
